Dental Health Issues
- Periodontal Disease (Gum Disease) and tooth decay can actually cause bad breath (halitosis). The health of your gums has a direct impact on the health of your teeth and mouth.
- To keep your gums clean and healthy, be sure to floss once a day and brush your teeth at least twice a day to remove bacterial plaque.
Poor Oral Hygiene Habits
- If you look closely at your tongue, you will notice there are many bumps and ridges (papillae). These spaces are an excellent place for bacteria to harbor. Bacteria build up can cause bad breath.
- Add brushing your tongue to your daily oral hygiene routine. Brushing your tongue can help eradicate this bacteria and help you keep your breath smelling fresh.
- Make sure to visit your dentist for regular cleanings and dental check up exams. At these appointments, Dr. Festa will perform an oral cancer screening, gum disease evaluation, and assess any tooth decay (all potential causes of bad breath).
- Dr. Festa also recommends buying ADA (American Dental Association) approved products when looking to lower the effects of bad breath.
Food or Drink Consumption
- The types of food and liquids that you consume can negatively impact the way your breath smells.
- Brush and floss your teeth after eating to reduce any bad breath symptoms.
- Tobacco products can cause bad breath along with many other health risk factors.
- Limit or remove tobacco products from your lifestyle to reduce the chance of bad breath and more serious health concerns and diseases.
